Dead Island Epidemic is a spin-off videogame from the Dead Island saga that has been developed by Stunlock Studios and published by Deep Silver. It can be categorized as a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) but developers have called it ZOMBA (Zombie Online Multiplayer Battle Arena) because zombies are the main enemy of the game. This is a great novelty since the other installments of the saga are included in the role-playing open-world FPS categories. In addition, unlike the previous releases, Epidemic is only available for PC.
The Dead Island trademark is in knowing how to captivate the players with its amazingly paradisiacal locations, in luxury resorts in tropical islands full of zombies, blood and havoc everywhere. Once you download and star playing, you will come back to the wooden cabins, the white-sanded beaches with lots of palm trees, waterfalls between cliffs and super-luxurious hotels. However, this time we will see everything from above (an isometric perspective), and as always, full of corpses and objects to collect and use as a weapon.
If you have played the game of the saga before, you will know some of the characters of this game. The narrator of the story is none other than John Sinamoi, the survivor lifeguard of Banoi. After surviving the events of the Dead Island, he goes to Amaia Island to be safe. However, Amaia has been infected too, and the poor Sinamoi has to run away from zombies again. Nevertheless, a group of survivors rescues him and together they face endless zombie hordes. Nonetheless, Sinamoi discovers that the survivors are also infected, but the virus, instead of changing them into bloodthirsty undead, makes them smarter, stronger and more able to survive.
Gamemodes and characters
As mentioned, everything in this game is seen with an isometric perspective. You will control several characters with the keys WASD and aim the attacks with the mouse. You will be free to perform basic attacks and special attacks just with the keyboard and a mouse. The main goal of this ZOMBA is to survive the endless zombie hordes as you improve your weapons by crafting them and leveling up your character. When your character levels up, he or she will obtain new upgrades for his or her skills, as well as new skills that are unlocked. In addition, as you level up, you will be able to enter and play new game modes such as the Heroic Horde Mode.
It can be categorized as a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) but developers have called it ZOMBA (Zombie Online Multiplayer Battle Arena) because zombies are the main enemy of the game
There are two modes apart from the single player one that serves as a tutorial. These modes are Scavenger and Horde. Horde takes place in several sceneries and you will have three teammates (online players) with which you must face plenty of zombies and all kinds of monsters. There are also final bosses in closed areas, locations with some traps, doors to unlock, etc. Due to the advance of the characters and the variety of situations, the Horde mode looks more like a Story mode than a Horde one. You will live it cooperatively, in several places and many different enemies waiting for you, in addition, you'll have a wide variety of weapons to defend yourselves. This release has the essence of Hack and Slash, with PvE in which your team will face the hordes, or PvP, in which you fight with other players to get supplies. In Scavenger, twelve players compete in three teams of four players. Teams will battle to control more resources than the enemies. You will also have to fight hundreds of zombies, which makes everything more complicated and more chaotic.
You will have the ability to play with eight different characters: Amber, Berg, Bruce, Sam B (with whom you're already acquainted), Isys, Fuse, Want and Voltage. Each one has his or her own skills, and some of them can be used with three different variations. These variations are Survivor, Armored and Mutated. With Survivor, the characters are standard and it is the one you will have to initially use. In Armored, the characters have their infection more developed and they are more dehumanized. They will have more weapons and armors to fight zombies. Finally, in Mutated, the infection has altered them almost completely and they do not look like humans anymore. They will have more special abilities and better resistance. As with any good ZOMBA, each character has his or her purpose, and you will have to gather your team smartly. For example, Berg is a very strong character, and very resistant so he can be included into Tank class. Another example is Bryce, who, thanks to his abilities with ranged weapons, is included into the Danced class.
